Swanson Vineyards
Swanson Vineyards is a family-owned winery established in 1985, and currently produces 25,000 cases annually. Production is focused on three core wines: Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Alexis.
Swanson Vineyards owns two vineyards in Oakville: 100 acres along the Oakville Cross Road, located adjacent to Opus One and Silver Oak Cellars; the second 40 acre vineyard, known as the Schmidt Ranch, is located west of highway 29, equidistant between Martha’s Vineyard and Dominus.
Swanson soils are part of
geological history dating back to the formation of the earth. Bedrock and
gravel, which in Oakville beneath fertile upper layers, are made of ancient sea
floor. Tectonic plate movements and volcanic activity pushed up mountains to the
east and west of the Napa River, while simultaneously the ocean bottom was being
displaced upward.
In the Oakville appellation, generally the soils west of the Napa River are
benches, or outflow fans, of eroded soils carried down onto and accumulated on
the valley floor. Over the millennia, these rich, well drained benches were
built up with layer upon layer of deep and rich topsoil washed down from the
hills and mountains west of the river. In some areas, the annual rainfall in
these mountains exceeds 60 inches. The soils to the east of the river, between
the river and Conn Creek, are alluvial in nature, laid down as sediment from the
frequent flooding. East of Conn Creek, the benches are less pronounced, less
homogenous, and shallower due to the annual rainfall that is usually less than
30 inches per year.
It is to these soils that Swanson Vineyards owes the wonderful aromas, flavors
and complexities of our fine wines. The vines are further nurtured by use of a
variety of rootstock, clones, spacing, and trellis systems, all selected to
enhance the capabilities of the soil. The various trellis systems contribute to
the wines' complexity by permitting different degrees of sun exposure as well as
levels of humidity and air circulation, causing varied canopy microclimates. The
winemaker's challenge is to ensure that all the potential of our vineyards is
captured and reflected in our wines.
