Whitehall Lane Winery
Whitehall Lane Winery is a family owned estate vineyard and winery in the heart of Napa Valley's Rutherford Appellation. This Rutherford Bench location is an area acclaimed to be the finest viticultural region in the world. Early Napa Valley settlers were drawn to the exceptional soils and ideal climate, planting grape vines at the Whitehall Lane site in the 1880's.
The winery's history began in 1979 when two brothers bought the 26 acre vineyard on Whitehall Lane, built the winery and directed their early winemaking efforts successfully to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. In 1988, foreign investors purchased the winery, attempting to produce a more diverse portfolio of wines and with plans to push production from a few thousand cases to more than 50,000 cases each year.
Whitehall Lane now owns a total of 110 acres of Napa Valley vineyards that produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery owns five prime vineyards that are the cornerstone on which the wines are made and include the Whitehall Lane Estate Vineyard, Rutherford West Vineyard and Bommarito Vineyard in the Rutherford Appellation, the Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena and the Oak Glen Vineyard in Napa. The Estate Vineyard is 25 acres of "Rutherford Dust" offering beautiful Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The Rutherford West Vineyard offers outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon fruit while the Bommarito Vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The Leonardini Vineyard is 14 acres of gravely soil yielding powerful Cabernet Sauvignon fruit and elegant yet intense Merlot grapes that go into the "Leonardini Vineyard" vineyard-designated wine. The 25-acre Oak Glen Vineyard produces flavorful Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
In its short history, Whitehall Lane has developed into a world-class winery. The efforts of the Leonardini Family and the winery staff are evident through the recent run of accolades from the wine industry press and also in the ultra-premium flavors of the wines.
The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are from the Leonardini and Morisoli vineyards and were picked by hand in two passes on September 1st and September 6th. It was fermented for seven days with an additional 17 days of extended maceration for flavor and tannin development. The wine was aged in French and American oak cooperage with 65% in new barrels and 35% in one and two-year-old oak. A small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Franc were added to the final blend to enhance the aromas and mouth-feel of the wine. The Wine Spectator rated our 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon at 97 points, and ranked it the number 3 wine in the world! “Deliciously ripe, rich and deeply flavored, with juicy layers of coffee, herb, currant, sage, chocolate, toffee and spice, with a long, complex, integrated finish. Best from 2002 through 2012. 2,850 cases made. (2850 cases produced)”
